Creeping - Order Of Snakes (2011)

This is my second favourite New Zealand metal album ever, so it's a little bit weird that it was only a free digital release, becoming somewhat difficult to find online. When I suggested to a member of Creeping that they put it on Bandcamp for a few dollars, they responded that Creeping is a non-profit organisation. They did eventually put the album up for free on that website for a while, but later took it down again.

It's a punishing slab of doomy black metal that's brilliant all the way through. Although my favourite Creeping song is the title track to Funeral Crawl, most of my other favourites can be found here, particularly the closing track Temple of Graves.

1. 12 Spires
2. Order Of Snakes
3. The Cavernous Light
4. Husk
5. Pestilential Rain
6. Crawling Into Hell
7. Temple Of Graves

Last.fm Collection

This is an archive of some very rare (and sometimes hilarious) music previously released for free via Last.fm by the artists themselves. Unfortunately Last.fm took downloads offline some years ago. Most of it is noise, industrial or dark ambient (along with some acoustic sorta stuff mocking black metal) from the heyday of Last.fm between 2007-2009. The exception is the Punk From Uranus tracks which are from 2012 onwards and mix gabber with punk and other influences. The Singing Microwave is an actual recording of an old microwave in Last.fm's offices, which they used on the website for testing purposes.

I've included the following releases and tracks:

Absolute Selbstverstümmelung - The Suicidal Lake Of Emptiness
Avoid The Man Of The Frostbites - 0.00AM
Avoid The Man Of The Frostbites - GlowAM
Avoid The Man Of The Frostbites - MilkAM
Avoid The Man Of The Frostbites - Untitled
Avoid The Man Of The Frostbites - WaterAM
Concrete-Encased Swans - Crushing First Impressions
Concrete-Encased Swans - God Has Oily Blood
Concrete-Encased Swans - Scrambled Human Remains
Concrete-Encased Swans - Wash All The Cars, Trash Talk All The Kids
Countess Kvltness - Countess Kvltness
Countess Kvltness - Satanic Moongoats Of The Grim Fjord
lols - fUCK
Mr Black - Amiga Preteen Tantrum
Punk From Uranus - various tracks
Radiohand - Kid XXX
The Singing Microwave - Bacon & Mushroom Tagliatelle
The Trippy Trio - Sleeping Sickness

Toasting Cain: The NMA Family Tribute Album (2004-2005)

This worldwide tribute to the band New Model Army was organised online by Jeff Pierce, the creator of the NMApix fansite. Some of the cover songs were carried over from a similar project that fan Chris Benn had started. The individual tracks were posted online for download, but the album was never released beyond that. The cover art is by Varina Crisfield. The Toasting Cain website itself was still online when I originally posted this, but some of the tracks were broken links. I've compiled them into an album, with the tracks in the order that they were posted.

The band Old Melody Men is notable for featuring a posthumous contribution from Robert Heaton, alongside his fellow ex-New Model Army bandmate Moose Harris. Robert passed away just before the project was launched.

1. Crimestick - Blue Ship
2. Stéfany & Xavier - Space
3. Cold Trash Radio - Afternoon Song
4. Zevlagh & Selikal - Mermaid Song
5. Lurch - My Country
6. Luke One - Courage
7. Guido Wulf - Marry The Sea
8. Britt & Louise - Marrakesh
9. Kevin De Groot - Stranger
10. Us And Them - Better Than Them
11. Old Melody Men - The Hunt
12. CAALMA - Bad Old World
13. MTS - Turn Away
14. Antediluvian Order Of Failed Jesuits - Western Dream

Metallica - Until The Studioshit Load (1996)

Metallica's first 'Fan Can' came with a CD of the band messing around in the studio during the recording sessions for Load. The CD had no tracklist, and instead suggested that you make up your own titles for the tracks. I don't have any versions of the CD myself, but from what I can tell, this is the release that was subsequently bootlegged under the title 'Until The Studioshit Load'. Whoever bootlegged it made some progress in naming the tracks, but still left a lot to be desired. In 2010 I came across Nick89BW's post on the MetallicaBB forums, and suddenly things were a lot clearer. I've mostly followed his corrections, but also made a few of my own and kept some of the titles simpler.

None of the cover songs are complete as such, but rather just the band jamming and messing around. Possibly the most well-known is the hilarious rendition of Oasis' Wonderwall with Lars on lead vocals. Aside from that, it's an interesting cross section of songs Metallica learned to play and jam around with growing up. Mouldy is a demo of Hero of the Day and F.O.B.D. is a demo of Until It Sleeps, the latter named for the Soundgarden song it reminded them of (Fell on Black Days). Both can also be heard on the 'Mucho Demo' album, which is worth tracking down.

1. F.O.B.D.
2. Breadfan (Budgie)

Snakes On A Plane: The Unofficial Soundtrack (2006)

This is a compilation of songs posted online during the hype leading up to Snakes on a Plane. I have no idea who compiled it, nor do I remember whether they made any artwork to go with it. New Line Cinema found out people were making songs about the film, so they held a competition on TagWorld.com. This encouraged even more people to make songs, and ultimately there were dozens or even hundreds of them. This collection is by no means a complete picture, but it captured some of the best and funniest songs out there.

The compilation kicks off with two unofficial audio trailers and then takes us through an assortment of comedy, rock, and a bit of hip-hop. I've included two extra songs which weren't originally in the compilation: Snakes on the Brain by Captain Ahab (an electro number which won the TagWorld competition), and Someone Tell Sam Jackson He's My Bro by DCLugi (a U2 parody which gave DCLugi some popularity on YouTube and impressed Samuel L. Jackson himself).

1. The Perry And The Rohan - Snakes On A Plane Trailer
2. John E. Grieco - Snakes On A Plane Trailer
3. DCLugi - SoaPSong
